Chiesa di S. Giovanni Evangelista Contrada S. Giovanni 12
This church with the adjoin cloister, is one of the more interesting buildings in Brescia. Founded in the IVth century by St. Gaudenzio, as Concilium Santorum to workship the relics coming from the Holy Earth, was rebuilt at the beginning of the XIIIth century. In 1440 was rebuilt in the today’s shape, while the inside was changed in the XVII century. On the façade overlooks the severe structure of the XVth century and the small Renaissance arcade on the right, through which you can reach the cloister. Inside are preserved important works by Moretto and Romanino, like the Chapel of SS. Sacramento decorated in equal part by the two artists from Brescia, with the pictorial cycle on the “Eucharist’s Exhalation” subject. On the right of the church there is the elegant double gallery cloister (1487) where, on the north side, are preserved paleochristian stones finds.
