Duomo Nuovo
Piazza Paolo VI

Started in 1604, the new cathedral of Brescia towers over the east side of Paolo VIth sq., standed on the ruins of the pre-existent St. Pietro’s de Dom basilica of the VIII century. The works for its building suffered some interruptions during the following centuries, until its conclusion in 1825, with the raising of the majestic dome carried out by Vantini, the third bigger in Italy after St. Peter in Rome and St. Maria in Fiore in Florence. On the eighteenth-century grand façade, in white marble of Botticino, emerge the statues by Carboni, Salterio and Possenti and the central portal with statues by Calegari and Carra. Inside, majestic too, there are some important works of the XVIIth century by Nuvolone and Palma il Giovane, and also valuable statues, on the presbytery, by Calegari (XVIIIth century). In the middle of the left side there’s the Paolo VI monument (1984) by Scorzelli, surmounted on the wall by the Visitation, the Wedding and the Presentation in the Temple, valuable works by Romanino, the same wich, in the past, decorated the organ in Old Cathedral.
